Czech Republic Wineries

You probably associate this country with its excellent beer, but what about Czech Republic wineries? Czech wine is not very well known as the vast majority of it is consumed domestically, so visiting this fascinating country is the best way to try it. The Czech Republic is a beautiful place, historically and culturally very rich, there are so many things to do and see that are not alcohol-related, but the wine and beer just make the place even better. So, what is there to do?

Prague and Nearby

If you have arrived the previous day it is most likely you will have enjoyed an introductory tasting with us at an atmospheric wine bar not far from your hotel. We will pick you up after breakfast today and you will head off with an expert English-speaking driver/guide, someone who is very knowledgeable in local wine. Our first port of call will be the area known as Troja. You will start with the visit to the impressive Baroque Chateau. The lovely manor house is surrounded by opulent suburban villas and manicured gardens and you will enjoy a guided tour here.

A short walk away, just across the street on the hill overlooking the Troja valley, is the vineyard we have been eyeing for a while. As we stroll the vineyards you will be able to see a large number of grape varieties that perform well in the Czech terroir. When we get to the terrace at the top of the vineyard slopes we will enjoy a couple of glasses and the superb views.

The next winery stop is just 15 minutes away and is distinguished in that it used to produce wines for Czech kings for many generations. Today it continues this rich tradition and produces some of the best quality wine in the region and even though it has a boutique-type production of 10,000 bottles of wine per year, this is still the largest winery within the city of Prague. After this visit, you will be taken back to the old town to enjoy the famous St. Wenceslav’s vineyards set on a south-facing slope near the Old Castle. Here you will have a great lunch accompanied by a glass of local wine of course. This winery restaurant is famous for its traditional gastronomy and stunning views from just above the vines.

To cap it all off we will finish our day exploring the Prague wine scene with a walk through Prague Castle with plenty of information furnished by your guide. This gentle stroll will end, predictably maybe, with one last glass of Czech wine at an atmospheric wine bar near the castle. Then it’s back to your hotel for a snooze probably!

1 Day Wine Tour in Bohemia

The Bohemia wine region is less than an hour drive from Prague and although quite small (only producing around 10% of the total Czech wine) it is a great place to visit. This is one of the most northerly wine regions in the world, actually a little more to the north than Rheingau.

Continuing your exploration of Czech Republic wineries, after breakfast, we will pick you up from your hotel and drive 40 minutes to our first Bohemia winery, one of the most modern in the country in fact. It is always interesting to blend contrast, traditional winemaking approaches with cutting edge techniques for example. The latest technology combined with careful work with the hands and a true love of the craft always produces high-quality wine., which you will  appreciate during the wine tasting here. We will have lunch at the first or second winery, or at a traditional restaurant along our route, depending on the itinerary for the day. We always give you a taste of local food, whichever country you visit with us, and the Czech Republic is no different.

The second winery we experience today is quite unlike the first one as it is very old and very traditional. According to historic documents, the history of winemaking in the municipality of Velké Žernoseky stretches back at least as far as the 10th century. Cistercian monks in this area created extensive wine cellars during the 13th century, many of which have been well preserved. Here you have the opportunity not only to taste its wines but also to enter these historic and unique cellars.

For our last visit today, we will drive you to the confluence of the Vltava and Elbe rivers, a place that is overlooked by the lovely Melnik castle. This not-so-humble home is owned by the Lobkowicz family who you may be hearing a lot about on your Czech winery tours. This noble family has a winery, which ones don’t! and you get the chance to try their wines in this wonderful setting. After a very full day of tours, tastings, visits and lunch it’s back to Prague to prepare for more tomorrow maybe?

2 or 3 Days in Moravia

Moravia is the main wine-producing region of the Czech Republic accounting for around 85% of the total, located near the border with Austria, and on about the same latitude as Champagne. We are not going to cover all the options for enjoying Czech Republic wineries and the cultural/historical highlights in Moravia as this would be a very long program page, but instead, just some bullet points to get your juices going. A night away from Prague would be OK, but 2 or even 3 would be much better, lets not spend all our time driving as there is so much to see, do and taste:

  • Tours, tastings and visits to contrasting wineries all over the region, flexible schedules, tailor-made
  • Overnight stays in traditional inns or wine-themed hotels, such as Ne Vinna Kavarna for example
  • Expert local wine guide for the entire trip, plus meeting with the winemakers and owners
  • Visit the historic town of Mikulov with its lovely castle, enjoying a tasting in the ancient cellar
  • Picnic among the vines – plus several culinary and gastronomic experiences along the route
  • Relax on a boat trip and tour of the impressive Lednice-Valtice castle and surroundings
