Low on Oxygen, High on Taste!

Our Salta wine tours offer visits to the highest vineyards in the world. Cafayate, some 3 hours drive south of Salta is the principal destination but we also visit Humahuaca, 3 hours north. Humahuaca is the site of the very highest wineries and vineyards. Both areas are stunning and the wine is deep and complex. Malbec is the real star in Argentina as you know but the highly aromatic Torrontes will also delight your palate.

Please note that day trips from Salta are not an option as far we are concerned. In our considerable experience, you need at least one night in Cafayate, Cachi or Tilcara to enjoy this area, two or three nights is better of course, or go the full monty with 4 or 5 nights!

We have some beautiful hotel options such as Merced del Alto hotel in Cachi that you see below, and also the historic Patios de Cafayate. Having private transport gives you much more flexibility so you can spend more or less time at each location at the suggestion of our guides or because you choose to.

A real plus when visiting less developed wine regions such as the Cafayate, Humahuaca, and Cachi area is the chance to get up close and personal with the wineries, vineyards, and people. With our local connections, we can arrange private tastings with winemakers and vineyard owners, benefit from the experience of the people who are actually making the wine.

Focus on Cafayate?

Cafayate is located a scenic 3-hour drive south of Salta amid spectacular semi-desert landscapes. This 2-day tour gives you an overview of several wineries located in and around Cafayate and can follow our suggestions below. Of course, as our clients, you can request a particular winery or all of them!

On this tour, you will visit 6 or 7 wineries over the two days, with tastings at each. We will tour the production facilities and cellars at several wineries, especially where there is something unusual to see or if the client shows particular interest in the ways things are done at a specific place, at others we may just have tastings, at others we might eat and taste. You will be driving through spectacular landscapes the whole time which provides a lovely backdrop to the wineries.

Cafayate Area Tour Highlights:

  • Drive through the lovely Quebrada de la Conchas | Photo stops en route
  • Visit Finca las Curtiembres en route | A tasting in the winery
  • El Porvenir winery tour plus private, premium tasting in the cellar
  • Several picturesque outlying wineries such as Piatelli and Domingo Molina
  • Option to taste wine by Michel Rolland at the Yacochuya Winery
  • Overnight stay in Cafayate | Free evening to eat in the main square
  • Drive to spectacular Finca Las Nubes for a tour and privately led tasting

Remember you have private transport and a guide just for you so if you want to chance visits around, add something, take something out, you just let us know.

Salta Wine Tours Loop – Cafayate, Molinos & Cachi

This is a comprehensive look at high altitude wine growing with some off-the-beaten-track visits, the (previously) highest wine in the world at Colome and a great deal of spectacular scenery en route. This tour can be extended by a further day if people would like to take the visits at a more leisurely pace or add even more highly recommended visits such as Bodega Tacuil and Humanao which are even more isolated in the mountains and offer yet another experience. Cachi is a lovely place that very few wine lovers will get to, stunning, and with unique terroir, Cachi should be on your list.

This 2 or 3-night wine triangle has the tour options listed above, plus the extra visits shown below:

  • Drive through the stunning Quebrada de la Flechas to Molinos
  • Tour and tasting at Colome | Lunch option at this fantastic winery
  • Enjoy the James Turrell Museum within the Colome vineyards
  • Overnight at the very comfy and historic Hacienda de Molinos hotel
  • Drive from Molinos to Cachi & visit the boutique Isasmendi winery
  • Visit the Miraluna winery in the hills above Cachi – tour, and tasting
  • En route to Salta stop at the rural Sala de Payogasta winery
  • Drive back via the Cardones National Park and Cuesta del Obispo

The absolute fullest tour is shown at the foot of this page, which requires 4 or 5 nights to be able to fit everything in. The most popular Salta wine tours are the ones that follow the triangular route shown above and require 2 or 3 nights on the road.

Wineries are scattered all over the route here, but remember that one of the great joys of this part of the world is a great natural beauty, culture, and history. Make sure you give yourself enough time to enjoy it all.

The Full Monty of High Altitude Wine

With 4 or 5 days available you can take in all the highlights of high altitude wine tours in Cafayate, Molinos, and Cachi plus see some spectacular landscapes and ancient ruins. All of the previous tour destinations are included on a full Salta wine tour program but we add a trip up to the Humahuaca Canyon where allegedly the new highest grapes in the world are being grown.
