Not everyone can focus solely on Grand Cru wines due to the prices that these wines demand, and to be honest nor should you. Start your Burgundy Adventure
We can arrange (if you wish?) to pick you up and transfer you to your hotel from nearby towns, airports, or train stations. Hotels or B&Bs can be suggested to suit your travel style and budget and the location is entirely up to you. An expert wine guide or sommelier will be with you the whole time, from your first night tasting through the various visits over any number of days, so we are always looking after you.
We can talk about where (and how) you might stay later on, but for many people, a stay in the wine Mecca of Beaune makes a lot of sense. Staying in around Beaune means you are very close to many prestigious wineries, a short hop from one another, plus you can easily travel north and south to other appellations. On your first night, we will arrange for you to have an introductory tasting of regional, village, premier cru, and grand cru levels, in both reds and whites, so your palate and nose will be tuned up.
How many days do you need?
A difficult question to answer but let us tell you what a standard day looks like so you have an idea of what we do. We would suggest you at least have two days guiding in two appellations so you have a good grounding, these two days with the first night tasting will give you a great overview. If you have more time, take in another appellation or two for the complete experience.
You can see from the sample itinerary below that a normal day would be something historical or cultural, two tastings at wineries and lunch at a third venue where you can choose your wine. Some time to stretch your legs will also be factored in.
Enjoy probably the most famous wine region in the world on our Burgundy wine tours
Sample Itinerary | Côte de Nuits
We will start the day after a leisurely breakfast and head off with your local expert wine guide for a private guided visit of the Château du Clos Vougeot. This historic chateau has been beautifully restored by the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin and is home to their famous Chapitres in honor of Burgundy wine. We then have a private tour and wine tasting at one of the many superb wineries in the Nuits Saint George area. You will enjoy your time in the company of the winemaker, visiting the extensive underground cellars before launching into an extensive tasting of the renowned wines of the Cote de Nuits.
Lunch is something we can include, suggest, or leave you to your own choices. Our suggestion is normally a local Auberge serving a fixed menu of Burgundy specialties and cheeses, accompanied by a fresh salad and a number of samples of wines selected by the chef or owner to complement your meal.
Probably the favorite place for wine enthusiasts to visit are the old cellars
A stroll past the famous vineyards of Romanée Conti and other very recognizable names will help our lunch travel south and give us the chance to examine the vines and ‘terroir’ of this famous winemaking region up close and personal. The final wine tasting of the day will be in the renowned Gevrey Chambertin region where we will taste some of the fruits of the different vineyards of Gevrey showing the ‘climat’ that makes the wines of Bourgogne so special.
After your day is complete we will drive you back to your hotel and leave you free for the evening, with a pick-up time for tomorrow or any ongoing travel arrangements. Remember we can combine any other region in France, such as Bordeaux, or other countries such as Spain, Italy, or even farther afield, Hungary for example?
