Arrival in Bordeaux – Introductory Tasting

What you do when you arrive will depend on where you are coming from and how active you wish to be upon arrival, but let’s assume you arrive in Bordeaux in the afternoon. Our local guide will meet and transfer you to the hotel of your choice and set a time to meet you in the early evening.

When he meets you later you will walk to a local wine bar to enjoy an introductory tasting. You will learn a little about the region, look at maps of the routes we will take and places we will visit and of course taste some wines. We will taste 3 or 4 different Bordeaux wine styles to prime your palate and brain for wine adventures to come over the next couple of days.

After this tasting you will be free to carry your evening on if you wish, your guide can suggest a place to have dinner – many guests simply stay at the venue where we are tasting and indulge themselves a little more!

Tours and Tastings of World Class Wine

Maybe you have an idea of where you would like tour and taste? Maybe you have a bucket list of Chateaux perhaps? No problem, we are here to make it happen. If you don’t have particular preferences on where to tour and taste then we will put together something perfect for you.

There are so many options just a short drive from your base in the city of Bordeaux. We can take in some of the impressive, big hitters on the world stage and blend those with lesser-known estates, boutique wineries where the experience is more intimate. We suggest at least two full days so you can focus on Saint Emilion and Pomerol, or more generally on the right bank, one day. Then we can enjoy the left bank the next day and include regions such as the Medoc and Graves. If you have a third day open to you we can add even more, of course, Entre Deux Mers for example. You could spend two weeks in the Bordeaux area and never get bored, and we haven’t even spoken about cultural, gastronomic, and active pursuits yet!

A Gastronomic Culture

The French are famous for their cuisine, and with good reason. Bordeaux enjoys a location offering different geographical and cultural influences. The city is just three hours drive from the Basque country in Spain, with its spicy Espelette peppers, Brébis cheese, and salted anchovies. It is also just an hour from the Dordogne region of France, a land of black truffles and foie gras, and Toulouse is two hours away, with its cassoulet and abundance of sunshine-fed fruits. You can enjoy all of this gastronomy in Bordeaux, and often fresh from providers who head over to Bordeaux’s central Capucins market when their produce is in season. But Bordeaux also has a cuisine all of its own that reflects the particular advantages of being a port city, on the crossroads of global trading routes.

With the Atlantic coastline, fish and shellfish are popular and you will be encouraged to try them while here. However Bordeaux is very much carnivore country and its most celebrated dish is entrecôte marchand de vin, also called Entrecote a la Bordelaise, a rib steak cooked in a rich gravy made from Bordeaux wine, butter, shallots, herbs, and bone marrow. Sounds pretty good, right?

Work it off – Active Wine Tasting

Maybe you would like to work off some of that fantastic food and wine, creating more space so you can indulge yourself even more? We can help with that, arranging for you to tour the area by bike, either the whole day or maybe just part of it. Your day will be spent pedaling gently among the vines, along country roads, and through villages. Tours and tastings, plus lunch will be set up for you so you can concentrate on just enjoying yourself.

The vineyards surrounding the village of Saint-Emilion are the perfect scenario for this, as are others in the region of course. In the case of Saint-Emilion, we are blessed with a historic village, beautiful vineyards, and world-famous Chateaux all within short cycling distances. Our cycling activities can be self-guided, with arrangements made by us, or we can send our guides with you.

Connecting or Going Home?

Our Bordeaux wine tours are easily combined with other wine tours within France or in neighboring countries such as Spain for example. La Rioja would be a great blend with Bordeaux, so please ask us about how to combine these two world-famous wine regions. Remember we are here to help with everything, be that flights, trains, car rental or whatever you need.
